Sixteen horses of noble blood,
From 6 months to 23 years old
Granddaughters and grandsons
Of great names known
At the grandest of thoroughbred tracks
Northern Dancer, and Secretariat
Lyphard, Sir Gaylord, Nashrulla too
Each one diminished to bone and flesh
Sad, unkempt and hungry
They’ve not known the kindness of a brush
Or the flavor of carrot and apple
We get to work, my girl and I
Phone calls, and free ads
With offers to load and deliver.
Three weeks later, all have new homes
Each one a chance at a new life
With proper care, a job to do, and most of all, love
