Lynn Brielmaier has ALS. He is an engineer and with his son has built the computer that he uses for his communication to the world. He wrote this wonderful poem for his companion and I’m reposting it for you. Contact him on Facebook.

Zippy

She’s 18 and has hip dysplasia. There’s no zip in her now. She certainly could pull a leash and drag you down the block, back in the day though. Steroid shots now last about 3 weeks. She never cries or complains.Perhaps she has some inkling of me, locked in. Not complaining.I can’t pet her, so she walks under my dangling arm during Hoyer transfers in & out of my power wheelchair, touching me.

**Ode to Zippy**

Soon comes, dear Zippy, that last vetward ride,

Though *hopefully* not yet the final call;

Eighteen long years have worn your youthful stride,

And hips once strong now answer slow to fall.

No *zip* remains—yet still your spirit stays,

A gentle ember glowing through the ache;

You pulled a leash for miles in younger days,

And left the strongest walkers in your wake.

Three weeks of borrowed ease the steroids grant,

But never once you whimper or complain;

You bear your trials with a quiet chant

Of steadfast love that softens every pain.

Perhaps you sense my own unmended part,

This locked‑in life that asks for patient grace;

You press beneath my arm as if my heart

Could speak through touch you offer in that space.

In Hoyer’s lift, you find me—faithful, near—

A silent vow in every gentle pass;

Your presence whispers what I need to hear:

That love endures, unbroken, through the glass.

So linger, Zippy, in these tender hours;

Your courage teaches more than words can say.

A dog’s soft strength outlasts the fading powers—

And lights the dark until the final day.

Lynn,
Such a heart warming poem…speaks volumes of the mutual love between a man’s best friend and his owner.
There’s no way a person can understand the bond who’s never known the love of a dog.
Truly, man’s best friend in this life—unconditional love.
You are blessed; so is Zippy!

Now this is real poetry. Beautifully done. Great last stanza.

So linger, Zippy, in these tender hours;
Your courage teaches more than words can say.
A dog’s soft strength outlasts the fading powers—
And lights the dark until the final day.

Thank you for sharing.

Sad and happy, sad but real, our love for our four legged friends whose lives are brief but none less lived.

I've lived here for 44 years. But it is only recently on Zoom with some spinal cord injured friends that I met Lynn. He was only 2 miles from me in Southwest Houston. I visited him and Zippy earlier this year.

Similar to Stephen Hawking and Freddie Everett (Houston based guitarist/singer/songwriter like Jimi Hendrix) Lynn is an amazing guy.

I didn't know he was a poet until he sent me this brilliant piece for his beloved buddy. I hope that when you read it you'll leave a comment for him because I've given him the link so he can see what you wrote.
