Poem Artwork

“You ARE a pretty girl”.

At twelve years old this was a first

Her mother had never uttered such words

Not to her, the youngest of four

But those words just hung in the hot summer air

She’d a saddle in her arms and sweat on her brow

Her long thin hair tied back with a red bandana

And those words just hung there, proof that they were said

So, as my little granddaughter, so much like her great aunt

Her thin hair in braids, a saddle in her arms

Looked up from her efforts, a smile on her face

Reminded me of my sister, I choked back my tears

I took those hanging words

And I put them to good use

Told my sweet grandchild for the hundredth time, I know

How very lovely and good she truly is

children are such a joy aren't they? While my sons and I never experienced horses, this poem brought back many many memories of when we camped and fished along the Kankakee River...the joy of watching them learn, laugh and run about like wild savages is as strong today as it was then. Excellent work here, Karen.

Karen, the picture of your Granddaughter is great and she is worthy of the words you spoke to her. I'll bet she will never forget them. I love your voice in this piece, it relays to the reader the sincerity in every word you penned. A great poem!

This truly brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes, Karen. Affirmation is EVERYTHING to a little child and your wonderful photograph says it all... What a total little Sweetheart and Darling! I have heard it said that positive words withheld is as much an abuse as harsh words spoken and, from my own experience, I can very much beleive it. Bless you and your heart of love and words for all these deserving little angels - dirty-faced or clean! :)) K xx

And keep on telling her, too, Karen; it is through our praise or our put downs that they develop their self image...call a child stupid or tell them they will never amount to anything and you can be certain it will come to frutation. Praise them and they will learn to soar. A great message in this offering.
Take care,
Sherry

Many times words are hard to come from parents for one reason or another but those that receive them hold them in their hearts.

Affirmation to a young girl child of the most valued kind, Karen...this is exactly the kind of support at a young, tender age that will award her with high self-esteem as she reaches her teenage years when a female needs it the most to think highly of herself to carry her on into her young womanhood where she is then able to reach for the stars! Great write. Happy Fourth...bandanas and saddles!
