Poem Artwork

They went around the arena,

Walking, Trotting, cantering,

In perfect harmony.

Her hair flew with the freedom,

Hands to her sides like wings.

“Look at me I’m flying!”

She the girl-child, so very young,

And he, the gelding, so very old.

They flew and gave to one another.

She gave to him a job anew,

And the love of a child so pure,

Without knowing, he gave her power and liberty,

Not often bestowed on one so young.

And so, the two, were the very best of friends,

Her secrets he never told.

And when his step became less than graceful,

She hugged his neck and said, whoa, boy, it’s okay.

I can understand the friendship one develops with an animal they are in constant contact with. You show that in your poem along with the caring. Its been a long time since I went horseback riding, but there is definitely a sense of freedom as you sail through the wind with your hair blowing behind you. Nice write.

Good friends, whether the friends are of the animal population or our dear treasured ones in the neighborhood, are blessings in our lives. Sometimes, I think if more children would trade the X-Box for the outdoors and visit with deer, horses, and other animals, the world may not be in the shape it is, now.

Beautiful writing, Karen. Thanks.
