The Preacher Preached

 

The preacher preached his bit of salvation,

And, “Come to Jesus, be saved.”

He declared my dad would have liked that,

But-he was wrong.

My dad didn’t hold any stock,

In all that Hellfire, and damnation stuff.

 

My father would have liked him,

To quote the Ten Commandments,

Or perhaps the Golden Rule,

And speak of folks doing right by one another,

As they walked the paths of their every-day lives.

 

But the preacher had to do it, I guess,

After all, he was a Baptist!

But as for me, I didn’t need it,

For I saw God in that church that day,

In the people who spoke of the decency and good,

Of the man they laid to rest.

I have been able to preach for almost 49 years without having to use the hellfire preaching. I've preached a lot of God's love and grace and compassion. I think it did much more good.

Have a happy V day Karen, I believe in the 10 commandments also, everything else could be left out if people only followed them, very thought provoking verse, hugs

We should remember only the good times we had with the departed, brimstone and condemnation aren't but verbal menaces of man, God told us unequivocally about His love, no preacher should try to dissect His words.
A god poem that deserve to be passed along.
