Kate and Annie

They work together, these two giants,

They have learned well the commands,

“Gee” and “Haw” “giddup” and “Whoa”,

They pull the homemade steel plow and planter,

Then the harvester and the wagon to bring it all in.

Their owner drives as his father before him,

And his father’s father when there was no other way,

And he teaches the same to his own boy,

And he hopes that his ways won’t be lost.

But Kate and Annie don’t know this history,

They just know to pull and to turn with care,

For their concern is the hay, grain and water,

Laced with a gentle rub on the muzzle,

And kind words when a days work is done.
