A Lovely Weed

Out in the field she walked

And brought back to me, her teacher,

A beautiful bouquet of dandelions,

These sunny gems brought a smile to my lips,

And a scowl from my aid.

“A pesky weed”, she declared,

Bit, I for one believe it true ,

That a dandelion’s value is sadly overlooked.

They are the first flower often plucked,

By pudgy toddler fingers and proudly thrust forth as gifts,

To give to mommies and grandmas,

And, well, any one else they love.

Their stems make fabulous chains to bejewel,

Or when split and put in water curl up,

Fantastically like the ends of ribbons on a present.

The sunny, cheerful flower, held to the chin,

Can reveal a variety of silly secrets,

Or if one chooses to rub it on the skin

Can turn it a bright shade of yellow.

Beyond that sunny, cheerful posy,

The greens are not only edible but also nutritious,

And the delight of blowing these seeds in the fall,

Cannot be matched by even store-bough soapy bubbles.

So, I must admit, I will ever be pleased,

With a bouquet of this beautiful, lovely weed!

Well... when you put it that way... :~) I love the thought that it is the first kind of flower ever picked by toddler hands for their mothers. That makes it a mighty special flower indeed... and maybe that is why there are so many of them... because the Lord wanted to ensure that mothers knew how special they are. :~)

I love this poem . It brought back many memories of my childhood! We also used to make the dandelion chains . It was great fun . Mom and I used to dig them up , wash and cook them for supper. They tasted quite good. They do make pretty bouquets! Thanks for sharing ...M

They are the first flower ever picked to give to moms and grandmoms.

How so very true, but like so many things once treasured, we now relegate this flower to a 'weed.' Dandelion Wine is very good, too.

Thanks for confirming my own wonderment of this beautiful weed. I often thought about filling my manicured lawn with them to produce a sea of yellow...but for fear of the neighbors....

Peace,

I love this Karen and the picture is a perfect compliment to the reading. One of the dictionaries defines a weed as an undesireable plant. If one takes the time to look carefully they'll find they each have a unique something about them. Some have thorns to protect them from insects, some have lovely flowers like the dandelion and the poppy. This year the field behind my home is blanketed with orange poppies as far as you can see. It's a lovely sight just as your poem is a lovely thing to read. The reading actually lifted my spirits.
Thank you for the interlude,
Marcia

I once cursed them as a homeowner but now seeing that bright yellow on green in fields and yards and listening to you bring back so many wonderful memories...yea...they are a lovely weed.

If it is pretty to the one picking them it should be pretty to the one receiving them. You spelled that out in fine verse, Karen . . .

A lovely write and I join you in praising the beauty of the dandelion. When I went for my walk this morning I saw a field of dandelions and it was absolutely beautiful. Every year this man mows his huge yard, but never cuts the huge side yard where the pecan trees are until after the flowers fade. It is like a small sea of yellow scattered across his land.

It might be a weed, but I think it is a beautiful weed.
