For A Secret to be a Secret

Perhaps no mention of it,

Should ever have been made,

Once she knew of its existence,

It haunted her. She had a need to know.

For in her mind, any number,

Of dismal possibilities were manifest,

It permeated her spirit,

And crept into her very existence.

And what good are secrets anyway?

The pain of the keeping,

Or the pain of its truth,

Of Joy being withheld,

Or possible happiness deferred.

‘Cause for a secret to be a secret

It must be kept by the keeper,

As well as by the giver,

To the very end of their days.

The secretive human race; a baby has no secrets but as it gets older the innocence disappears. Behind closed doors, the secretive are being discreet. I love the Leonard Cohen: and your love is a secret all over the block. The paradox is at the heart of many great songs and poems.

Love the poem, but I'm not much on secrets. Too complicated. The truth will stand on its own merits. Patrick

Wonderfully expressed, Karen. It is certainly not easy being asked to either keep or receive someone else's secret. What might at the time seem a privilege can, as you say, become more of a torment, one way or another. Strong and clear writing which sets out and clarifies the conundrum well. xx

..an old woman asked another "Can you keep a secret?" The other woman answered eagerly "Yes I can!"...then the lady responded in a soft voice "So can I".....lol

Wonderful twists and turns in this gem!
I will never forget how my mother carried all of my own secrets loyally to the very end of her days.

So you won't be coming to the potting shed tonight?

It is kinda funny, a secret, a secret that everyone knows, but doesn't talk about it until it is realised that it is not a secret. Other than the potting shed ;)

Karem this one left me pondering and wondering a lot about how much pressure a secret can put on a soul. To keep a secret from one we often have to lie to another...is this the price of a secret. Anyway this is truly a poem to make the reader dig deep and think a lot. Well done.
