Hard to believe we were intimidated by Harry when we moved to Paxinos; he was gruff, but kind. Helen was the quiet, old-fashioned farm wife, the picture of the grandmas of the past. Their "dutchified" accents gave us some chuckles. Mostly, we just basked in their goodness.
For Christmas one year, I made them a plaque with this poem.

"......and who is my neighbor?"

You're a blessing to us all --
Your neighbors see
what is meant by
friendliness and charity.
Lessons in compassion
carried 'cross the lawn;
the lifting up of Jesus
through each new dawn.

Grandparents by proxy
to our kids in need;
For their souls' rich blessings
to the Lord you'd plead.
Now that they are grown & gone,
your prayers and love
lift them in remembrance still
to God above.

A call in summer
meant blessings from the land;
Garden bounty,
offered by a neighbor's hand.
Loaves of homemade
bread or rolls
spoke of warm caring;
Cherished feelings --
house-to-house --
from neighbors' sharing.

Your steadfast faith has lifted me,
though unseen;
Words can't ever say
just what your friendship means.
I'll never comprehend
all God has done through you;
I just pray He'll teach me
to be a neighbor
just         
like    
    you!

 (Jesus) answered..."Love your neighbor as yourself."
...so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
(Luke 10:27 & 29)
