Floaters

I refer not to Harbor Police scenes, nor to Hooters waitresses in a swimming pool, nor to objects in the toilet. No, it's those little things we occasionally observe in our view that can become very large and very pesky if we fail to exercise due care of our eyes.

Poem Artwork

On monochrome field I cast my gaze,

The better to see my bogey friends,

That slide through shadowed haze,

And jump aside as scrutiny ends.

To analyze shape is to be sneaky,

To focus off-center, a better view,

Else off they go fast and freaky,

To jerk away and hide from you.

There’s one now, a gauzy thing,

Folded and punctuated black,

It swings along, a bird on wing,

And swirls and whorls on track.

Another set, just points of ink,

Half dozen sail by on a twitch,

Like gnats — in half a blink —

Black as coal or shiny pitch.

Pervasive, pixilated shadows —

Like local dark matter interstice —

Curtain my soul’s faded windows,

Clear views I’ve come to miss.

Doctor says over floaters I’ll win,

Given some time and gentle care,

Don’t use knuckles to rub again,

And no boxing, or retina will tear.

That is a really well-written stanza. I love how you took such a unique subject matter and really made us see the floaters ourselves, and you didn't use tired word choice, either. Good stuff- Michelle

Hey, I've had those....

I always thought floaters were those things we left in the toilet when we eat right, ;-)

OH I hate those things. Have had them for years (due to extreme myopia). You capture them well in these rhyming lines and make us "see." :) Well done, Leland.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

The power of the pen to transform the challenges of physical being into literary creation is an extraordinary thing indeed. With FLOATERS we get to learn, laugh, and appreciate all at once.

Ouch. You cannot know what this means to me, Leland. I have had four eye operations in my life. One of them was for retinal detachment in both eyes. If not for the quick response of the opthalmologists, I would be blind. I know all about "floaters." I've gotten used to living with their annoying presence. Sometimes, they seem to get "into a tizzy" and like to be noticed. Thank you for this. I'm quite sure many will relate. Love and peace,

Regis
