My dog thinks he's a human
And I have to say I agree
To say he's only a canine
Doesn't seem adequate enough to me.

He has claimed his place in our home
It seems as if he's always belonged
Like he's one of the family
Another child to my husband and me.

But he's more than just "human"
He has finer qualities, you see
He's a fiercely loyal and protective companion
Who guards our family with intensity.

He loves to ride in a car
And does not mind going far
He likes the wind blowing across his ears and head
But wouldn't stoop so low as to ride in a truck bed!

He misses us when we're gone
And loves it when we come home
He'll stand on his hind legs and give us a hug
And look at our cat with an expression that's smug.

And if another dog wants to play
He'll look at it as if to say
The only ones with whom I interact
Are the two-legged variety
And that's a fact.

When we talk to him, he listens
He knows all the verbal commands
And in his eyes always glistens
The joys of being one of the "humans."

About my dog, a Weimaraner named Boo Radley, who I call a hu-dog because he seems to have as many, if not more, human qualities than dog qualities.
