I dedicated a poem a while back on the loss of my dear friend Gary Weese, since then his wife has been placed in a home, she doesn't understand what has happened or why. Kay's Alzheimers has gotten worst and she doesn't remember who Gary is and ask has she done something wrong because she knows this is not her familiar surroundings. I feel when I speak to her and the way she looks at me, inside she wants to let me know she remembers but don't know how to communicate. I guess this is what I feel. My heart breaks at the thought of a terrible illness that can so quickly steal what is yours and yours alone.

And  Soon Time Stood Still
November 4, 2008
Written By: Rose Marie Rideout

I remember as though it were yesterday,
That smile you shared so willingly.
Then it faded as you became ill,
We knew,  soon time will stand still.

I remember well as you shared,
Your fears of what was to come.
We cried together at what was  to be,
We would always know, you and me.

Time too quickly passed by,
Here you are alone today,
Not knowing where this place is,
or understanding the reasons why.

Almost as though it’s some dark corner,
of the unknown with a lost fill.
Something from the fearing past,
As I watch you and soon time stood still.

That glimmer in your eyes,
As you watch me when I speak to you,
It hurts me deep in my heart as I feel ill,
For the pain I feel, as time stood still.

Robbed of my love and fond memories,
Stolen are my family & my life.
Saddness and fears have struck me,
Stolen my rights as friend, mother & wife.

God has taken my husband home,
Now I am left here all alone,
I don’t understand why I am ill,
Or why so soon time stood still.

That disease is such a sad one because it takes away you from your family and the ones you love. I hope that one day they will have a cure for this disease. So many loved ones are left out because the patient doesnt remember them and they feel the pain. A very good work.

I can not begin to tell you how this moving poem has affected me. My father suffers with Alzheimer's and is in a nursing home. Just today, my mother was diagnosed with the same. I am her caregiver and my heart breaks knowing what is ahead for her and for those of us who love her. I know, all too well, the feelings you express and I know the blankness in their eyes and the sadness in their hearts and I pray for your friend and all who suffer, that they find a cure for this devastating disease. God bless you for sharing your heart ~ Elizabeth

Superb poem on the topic Rose! You should know there is no way to communicate with Alzheimers, just be yourself as you were with her before, and that's the best you can do. My prayers go out to her and bless you for being there.

Love,
Eileen

My heart goes out to you Rose. My mom was clutching in her fists two door knobs stating she could never let them go as they were her two children. Yet when visiting, she could not even recognize us and would almost react in a frightened manner. I can tell you it is a heartbreaking tragedy that you keep reliving in your mind. Very difficult situation and so sad to watch as someone slips away and there is nothing you can do. You truly are a brave soul filled with light, compassion and love....

Be always safe,
Karen

Sad write, Rose! No one really knows how much an Alzheimer patient can remember. They might not remember certain events and things in the past, but surely the people that they see everyday, and the surroundings that they're in everyday, they can continue to remember. Perhaps not the names of the people, but they remember the faces that love them and give them comforts. How can people think that if an Alzheimer patient doesn't remember the person's name means that they don't remember them? It's just the names they forgot, but not the faces they are familiar with. There's a difference there.

A thought-provoking compassionate write, and filled with lovely sentiments!

Anger, pain and depression are common emotions associated with the frustrations of this life. Know that he is in the Father's hand now, Rose.

My heart goes out to you, and your dear friend's widow, Kay. Tragic.

In support of Sandie May Angel-Joyce's review:
Former President Ronald Reagan, an Alzheimer's victim, received a visitor at his ranch after his retirement from public life. "Nancy, I know that man, he is a VERY famous man," He said puzzled as to his guest's identity. It was his former Secretary of State, George Schultz!
