- what's behind the mask -

Poem Artwork

I am made of wax,
but I tend to forget,
until the hand of a friend
touches a teardrop on my cheek
and sees it harden
on the tip of her finger.

Like a candle,
consumed from within,
tormented by the wind,
my life melts away
and I weep wax.

No one will stop
the inevitable process;
an audience never acts human,
passive people sit like dummies,
fascinated by the fire.

I thought that life was fair,
enough for me to trust - once more -
the promise of love,
until I watched it turn
into the biggest, dripping lie.

Unconditional - I was told -
yet I was presented a bill
and, in a state of shock,
I was stabbed, more than once
by a butcher with velvet gloves.

My back was crushed
but my face, still intact.
So, somebody made a wax cast
and used it for my death mask.

My new face looks so real,
that no one could tell,
although, behind the mask of death,
please learn, there is nothing left.

I guess my soul found a safer place to hide.

Great poetry, metaphysics, and introspection. The soul examines its abode! ... Cullen

When a wax doll burns from the inside out, the last thing to melt is her smile. Did you know that? The heart goes first, then the lungs, then the other vital organ. Wax oozes out the eyes and under the fingernails, and then the smile starts to sag. When it's gone, the head caves in. Then the wax monger comes, wads the doll up in a ball and makes a candle that will burn from the top to the bottom--but the soul of the doll? It remains. That's what that little wispy grey matter is that streams up from the wick. Did you know? --Charlie

Living can at times be very cruel, but you must fight and never give up to search for truth and leave all else behind....

Be safe,

This is such an intense write with such vivid images that it is like watching an old Alfred Hitchcock monologue in technocolour. Very well done dear Axilea.

Yes, tell it like it is -- tough and brutal; the constant challenge to maintain our human heart. Crushed, it ain't easy ... and, oh! your words tell it well. Jerelyn

Whew this is deeper than a deep dish pizza! My favorite lines are, "I thought that life was fair,
enough for me to trust - once more -
the promise of love,
until I watched it turn
into the biggest, dripping lie."

I love this section because my mind instantly connects with love as being a passionate fire, but then it burns you and your tears are like wax melting! Now that's a Masterpiece Sista. I truly enjoyed your amazing word art! Encore!!!!!

Life is like the candle...as you show it drips and it glows...it iluminates and it flickers within the course of it's fading...yet it also burns if you touch it's flame, like the unfavorable and unfortunate times, the experience we capture as we walk this path and then it all ends....

within death and after death there still shines the light of the Soul...and yes it most likely is a much safer place...

enjoyed...
