My Cat Died Long Ago, My Current Cats Are Alive And Well. Honoring The Great Pablo Neruda Based On His Poem 'A Dog Has Died'
A Cat Has Died
By La Belle Rouge
My cat died
I buried her in the garden
next to the red camellia
Someday my ashes may join her there
but she’s gone now with her sleek fur
her elegant walk and pink nose
and I, the mystic who has wondered
about rebirth or heavens of bliss
for human beings
now I believe in a heaven, not for me
but for all sleek fat cats
where my cat will wait for me to arrive
blinking her golden eyes in rapport.
I refuse to speak of earthly sadness
of having lost a friend, companion.
She was goddess, never servant.
Her bond with me was like a queen
holding court over her loyal subject.
Allowing the touch of my hands
upon her royal person only as she requested.
She never tore at my stockings
or sullied the furniture with dirty paws.
Her intimacy was given as the supreme favor
She used to lie stretched on my bed
with slanted, alien eyes of ancient wisdom,
gazing at me, giving me the attention, consideration
I needed, enough to make a self centered person
understand that, as a goddess, she was wasting time.
With those eyes so much wiser than mine
she’d continue to gaze at me
with a look that she gave to me alone
all her elegant, independent life.
Always near me, never a bother
asking nothing at all.
How many times I evied her agility
as she walked over the tables and chairs
and around curios, never breaking anything.
Her company warm and royal
when winter kept us fireside.
My sleek, brave kitty jumping at shadows
attacking dust bunnies under the bureau.
My majestic cat, playing the lioness
face to face with a dangerous mouse.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
as only cats know how to be regal
with only the audacity
of their independence of spirit.
There are no farewells for my cat who died.
We were always truthful with each other
So now she is gone and I buried her
and it is finished....
I know how all of this feels, I have cats still about the house, but Aristotle and I had a special closeness. That is the one I wrote about no Greater love, we are so blessed to have them.
Very well written, and heartbreaking. I, too, lost my beloved cat of 16 years, it's been about two months now, but I still miss his paw patting my face, or his green eyes looking up saying, I want to come on your lap. I'm so sorry about your loss.
I really love this. You've caprured the essence of this regal, beutiful creature that graces our lives with its presence. You've also taught me something - I usually switch off fast when a poem isn't constructed on the basis of rhyme - I stayed with this one.

You have truly summed up cats and how they pick where they live and who they love. Yes, we are their servants. Cat owners are people who had better be certain of themselves for their cat will not help except to be present. Their mere presence is in and of itself their respect, their gift to you. Now I will go feed my three cats and see if they will grace me with a bit of attention. lol. Yes. A wonderful poem. and very artistically written. Full of wisdom of the ages. Liz
This is incredible. Exactly how it is between me and my Lady cat (who is aging incredibly gracefully but not dead yet!) Thankfully, she owns me! You said it all for me and my cat. And as I was reading this, I kept thinking I was reading some poem in a magazine somewhere. I don't think it gets much better written. So what do they say about guys who love cats?
La Belle, this is so beautiful and a most gracious tribute. I have my Cheyenne buried in the front landscaping under her favorite window. Robert made her a cross, painted it white, wrote her name across the front. We planted colorful flowers all around her to express the beauty and love she so elogantly brought to us. Very heartwarming piece....
oh my dear Belle...this leaves me sad because of the reverent love you feel and happy for the same reason. Your excellent description touches the heart -- cats are indeed regal, majestic, intelligent, wise and so much more...
A few months ago, I acquired MY first pet - a cat named Toby. You have described him to a "T" in this wonderful poem about your cat. It is because of him that I wrote "If I were a cat." The joy that he brings to me is second to that of my husband and children. I'm hoping I'll have Toby for many, many years just as you have your cats.
This is a beautiful poem.

When I could have a cat, my house had a welcome mat that said, "The Cat and the housekeeping staff welcome you."
This was a teary read for me Sissy. Almost enough to make me say to heck with allergies and get another cat!
Love,
Annie

I'm sure pets go to heaven, if not it could get boring.
ASAP get another....
I have never had the honor of having a cat, but I did have a dog, his name was Buster and he was a beagle. We had our own language, and on his death, he was in my healing arms, and I swear, I felt his soul leave his body at the moment of his death. I will never forget that feeling of release from this world, he soul was soaring and I cried but was elated for him.
Pets are so innocent and clear, they have no fear of dying, and we should embrace this and go out quietly and with dignity just like them.
Much peace, love, and light,

I don't think you ever forget a feline friend after he or she has passed; I know I still remember "Friday" (domestic shorthair) and "Ouizer" (male Maine Coon); I still miss them even now, and it's been over ten years for both. I'm sorry for your loss; God be with you during this sad time!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <
I also remember "Cajun" (female Maine Coon), but she didn't die; I had to give her away to someone else because I was moving; the pain was just as real as if she had died. I miss her very much too. I loved all my kitties, but I think I loved "Cajun" best because I chose her.
So hauntingly beautiful ! People own dogs, but cat's own people! I love the attitude of cats, they allow us to love them, they determine when and who! LOVE YOU! Sissy

I've been truly blessed with many just like her over the years, and they truly grace us with their presence, wisdom, and love. And I seem to also use that very sad tune, Nature's Lament, on many of my poems these days.
I don't think it is ever finished: the memories, the love you shared linger in beautiful, heartfelt rememberance: a eulogy, if you will, painfully penned. I'm sorry for your loss.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
And Pablo Neruda...sighhhhh one of my favorites. As are you.
