Together Again
By La Belle Rouge

I watch you together, enchanted at the sight
of my two Edvards becomin fast friends
Yes, Dearest his first name is yours
and he will take your last one as well
for when he was concieved you and I were
more joined in spirit and body than any ring
or ceremony could ever have rendered us
Your dear face, so war worn, so lined by pain
takes on new life as your lips graze his head
and paternal joy radiates from your eyes
as you hold his tiny hand in your large one
Supper is ready so we all sit down together
yes, all of us, both white, black and
all shades that bridge the two, there are
moments of jovial conversation and hushed awe
at the sacredness of this long awaited moment
and your image reflected in your son’s face

I am elated at havin both my men now
and joy explodes in my heart as our world
here at the same dinnin table where first
I saw your face draws us to life’s center
After dinner little Evard has fallen asleep
and Mammy Rose takes him away to his cradle
You mention your long ride and the need of a bath
As you yet sit in your dinnin chair I move behind you
my arms encircle your neck as my lips whisper softly
against your ear, “I will retire then, give me a while
before you come up to bed, I’ll pour a bath for you”
On the table before you I place the last of the cigars
and the cognac once again my whisper captures
the depths of your imagination “Savor these My Love,
there are greater pleasures to follow tonight”

In my bathchamber I quickly bathe and then
with reverent hands I find the white laces and
lavender frock, pull them on and pin my copper hair
into an upsweep after dabbing jasmine perfume
in all the places a man’s nose would appreciate
I hear your boots in the hall and your light knock
Be still my heart for I am overcome with desire
I swing open the door and you devour me
with your eyes as you unbuckle your sword
and cast it away on the floor like some cursed thing
I feel the fire rise to my face and race to my loins
You are home at last, there is no pleasure at all
we will fail to partake of on this night of nights

“The bath is drawn, My Darling Colonel,
the bath chamber lighted with scented candles”
“I feel so old My Belle," you say "so worn out
and I fear my hair is now more silver than when first
you surrendered your love to me at the Santee”
“But didn’t you know Edvard, your silver hair
attracted me that August night so long ago
You are a silver fox, like our beloved Bobby Lee
mature, wise, decent and kind but experienced
in the things that a win the war for a lady’s heart”
I watch as you unbutton and drop the uniform
shocked that you are wearing no undergarments.
“Pardon, My Lady, but none of us have had linens
for at least a year now, I hope I’ve not offended you”

Oh no I am not offended, I am on fire for you
the hard muscles of your chest, the three wounds
gained in the gallantry of your Southern duty
displayed like metals of bravery and honor
Then glancing lower my fire blazes white hot
as I see your strength and virility has not diminished
I think I shall faint from the heat of my passion
and so I slowly, with as much seduction as possible
disrobe as I did for you that night at the river
The bath is warm and filled with bubbles
from the last drops of my French bubble bath
I slide in front of you and lean back contented
against the hard pillow of your chest while...
hardness beneath the water is not unnoticed
and I silently thank God that this shall be our life
until one of us lies by the Santee waiting for the other
This shall be our life....to love and be loved, in peace
The pleasures of this night and many others await us

War is like a nightmare, it will toss our soul around in despair until we awake to a dawning day of peace.
I am sure that the Colonel will oblige writing the last paragraph.
As sensual and inviting poem as ever.
