I watched you play in the grass
as you chased a wayward leaf
pouncing like a wild wolf
on a frightened, hapless rabbit.
You thrashed it back and forth
caught in your dangerous mouth
shredded with needlelike teeth.
You made sure that leaf was dead
before you gingerly hurried
to plan the next bold attack.
Fearless, King Of The Backyard,
dreaded by leaves and twigs alike!
Two pounds of curls and pom poms
and an attitude that says you are
a big dog trapped in a tiny body.
You conquered a perilous past
and have no thought of tomorrow.
I watched your marvelous magic
Sweet Little Sorcerer Of Smiles
and wished I could be a Toy Poodle;
proud round pom pom held high
ears flying in the September wind.
Mine was Kaiser, a Alsatian German Sheapherd dog from a pupy to a 120 pounds pal with a penchant of sleeping when I sat on the porch in my rocking chair looking at Frisco bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, with his enormous head over my feet, growling now and then if I stopped rocking. He was my friend.
