This reads like a song-- and I see now it is one (silly me). A few things struck me-- the lyrical flow of the write, the stunning visuals, and the warmth of the sounds within the piece, like the d's in the first two lines, followed by more alliterations with f in the next two-- and it goes like that throughout the poem (and I L0VE that kind of stuff)... mmm behold the marriage of d's and s's here: "discover love’s cache // in the dark sea of your self" And then you end with those luscious "shhh" sounds in "shadow shackled in dreams." Way to go, Belle! --Charlie

Belle, this is simply stunning and even in YOUR canon of Romance, stands out by a mile. Not only is it fabulously crafted and formulated in its fishy tail/tale, it is also written with such lilting and lyrical classical poetic warmth - YET is shot through with vivid modern-day emotions that are truly felt in the here-and-now, giving this subtle, enduring mythological mysticism a contemporary edge. The mystical siren lover knows of her beloved's feelings deep in her inner being yet experiences the pain of "having" to remain concealed in their mutual long, dark night of the soul for whatever inconvenient or necessary personal reasons. This appeals as an age-old archetype to both women and men, yet is equally painful to both in the stark highlighting of how often the siren is both beloved and forcibly estranged: a duplicitous and sorry state. As much as we women might desire to be the Mermaid Venus, not one of us might ask to be the one destined to be denied an undeniable love, and therefore consigned to be alone. Mermaids have been on my mind these past few days, but none have seemed so real as the one you so sensitively sketch for us here. My new favourite of yours, bless you xx.
