Memorial Day....So many of our Veterans made the ultimate sacrifice. They died on foreign soil defending our country and our flag. Others came home wounded or emotionally broken, they have died a little more each day from their wounds and their memories. Thank you to all Veterans and to their families who also pay the high price of war. God bless all of you for your service. When you pass a Veterans' Cemetery give thanks.
Dreams
they were young and they had dreams
but war was more important it seems
so he flew faraway to a foreign land
to fight in jungles or desert sands
every day she prayed he'd stay safe
the days dragged by, so long the wait
wrapped up in a flag, a gift from Uncle Sam
civilian's around her didn't seem to give a damn
they didn't have to fight, didn't have to die
some shed a few tears but most didn't cry
they lost their youth, gave up their dreams
their country should be thankful it seems
on Memorial Day she still visits a white cross
and there she still mourns his untimely loss
flags on crosses as far as the eye can see
America's best will never be all they could be
they paid the ultimate price to defend us all
they bravely answered their country's call
think of the dreams they will never get to live
for you and me their lives they had to give
passing a veterans' cemetery say a prayer
for the loved ones of the heroes buried there
and give thanks to God for the sacrifice true
of those who died for the red white and blue

As I read I had mixed feelings. Yes, a time of great need and great peril, everyone wants to be a soldier and fight for what is right. Many give their lives so that evil cannot prevail.
But we have become part of a "police force" maintaining order in a more unified world, and have less need for soldiers. The result is a mercenary army based on pay and promises for a college education that attracts the poor and those without a chance for scholarships and advancement otherwise. Some sign up to put discipline in their lives. They don't think of the military is a place to give their lives.
I don't think civilians "don't give a damn," it's just that they are desensitized by not having any military experience other than movies and television that tend to glorify war and not focus on the hardship involved.
I wish our leaders would find ways not to go to war in every case, but I make a point of talking to any veteran I see to let them know that I am not one to look away in disgust but welcome them as part of my world, too.
