“I must go away to fight,” he said,
“For liberty calls and I'm filled with dread
of what the king may next decree
I will return, Amelia, wait for me.”
“Oh, must you go, My Dearest One?
For soon our precious baby will come.
What shall I do with my husband gone
and what if you are gone years long?”
“I cannot know how long war may be.
Be patient, Amelia, and wait for me,
As soon as I can I'll come home to thee.
Tyranny cannot stand, you surely see.”
“Oh yes, I know what we must fight for
but I had hoped it wouldn't come to war.
What if devotion to country takes your life?
I must struggle as a widowed wife.”
“ My Darling do not think it shall be so,
because to a righteous fight I must go.
Pray for me and may our God's will be
to bring me safely home to thee.”
“ Tis for thee and our babe I go
that he may no more tyranny know.
Nor bear the heavy burden of a king
who wants to take from him everything.”
“A slave to make him to others whims
and to cause him to suffer for others sins.
So kiss me, Amelia and wave goodbye.
I pray thee, do not let me see you cry.”
“Into the house, Husband, I shall haste
for weep I will at the thought of waste.
Though I know it is a righteous fight
I will be cold and alone in our bed tonight.”
“I will wait for thee, as long as must be.
Pray God keep you safe, come home to me.
Many patriots have died already in the fray
May freedom be won at the end of war's day.”
And so he left and she wept for him
knowing not when they'd be together again.
After the heat of battle in cold, Virginia snow
he lay dying on the battlefield praying she'd know
He had willingly fought and given his life
to end the cruel oppression and the strife.
For freedom is not free when tyranny reigns
and freedom is worth bearing death pangs.
Their baby was born, American and free
for the righteous fight was fought to be
the beginning of a nation of free men.
May tyranny never claim her again.
Freedom is never free, guard it with your life.
It takes a righteous stand for liberty's light.
Stand for this blood-bought land, for the right
even if it takes again, a righteous fight.
My father, husband and son .... each left home and fought. They each returned home and so our family over the years of different wars did not give the ultimate sacrifice. Although returned, our family warriors did not return unchanged and their services comes with a constant price and that price can be costly, as costly as loss of life during the actual war.
Certainly the war fought to found the U.S. was a righteous fight, and lives were lost that made the country possible. Your story poem tells a sensitive and loving story between a husband and wife, their sense of duty to a new nation and the loss of their future together. I enjoyed reading your poem as it expressed the strength of cause and tender love between a married couple who will be parted.
Freedom is precious and must be protected, but I would pray that freedom can be maintained without another war.
Thank you for these very touching words and poem/story!! In my mind, I revisited battlegrounds I had visited while driving all over this country to visit my brothers in the Navy, Air Force, and Army. Yes, in these United States, we must remain vigilant for tyranny and separation!! I enjoyed this very much, my dear!!
WE always must stand up and fight for our land, today more then every Ma belle, Thank you for your heart felt story poem. They were heroes back then, we still have a few today :)
So beautifully written and so true to the heart. Of a time when simple farmers took up arms against a greedy king who taxed them heavily for the right to live on "his land." And so many families who lost fathers, brothers and husbands who gave their life so that the United States of America could form a government free from the English King and English Church.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.

I also enjoyed the poem's cadence and rhyme.
