Come sit a spell, my daddy said
the maples shaded his balding head
I didn't know but I know now
how time flies, I still don't know how
And so we sat and we talked about life
my daddy was one who avoided strife
we talked about peace , talked about love
and divine protection from above
What would I give if only again
I could sit a spell and talk with him
time moved on and he's no longer here
but the things he said I still hold dear
Sit a spell and talk a while
with those you love, gift them a smile
for life is short, too soon it's gone
but if you've known love, you'll never be alone
How utterly beautiful are your words and sentiments Susan…
They brought genuine tears of appreciation and remembrance
to my eyes…like you, oh for the chance to sit for a spell with my
much loved Dad…and hear of his love and wishes for me…and us all his precious family…but having known such love…I’m never alone…
Your words drifted into my heart, my friend, and took me back to a time similar to yours. Oh! To sit with my father again and to hear his words of faith and love!!! You took me there and I thank you!!
wow, how deep this one is felt , If you've known love, you will never be alone, so true, Once we know what it is, we keep it safe within our consciousness . You poetry flourishes under the lamp of love. xo
This is a sweet poem with a valuable lesson to it. How many times have we seen people slip away from us and then regret that we didn't spend more time with them. Well done.
What a wonderful, uplifting poem at a time when, daily, new threats to life appear on the horizon. I can just see you sitting there on a warm fall afternoon sharing memories and advice. Why I always sought out the elders in my extended family. They always had something to share with me that I valued from their experience.
The only time my father felt the need to talk to me seriously seemed to be when he was drunk and had enough courage. He was full of advice, largely from his experience, so I know why. But I generally went in the opposite direction he advised. He hated my being paralyzed, but bragged about me and my accomplishments later.
What a sweet memoir, Susan!!! This makes me think of my dad too. I miss him so much!!!
I wasn't too close to my dad when I was a little girl due to the Chinese tradition and culture, but when my parents chose to come to Canada to be with us my parents and I grew so much closer and I could really felt my daddy's love during the last 13 years of his life. I was totally happy to have my parents with us.
So very real, so very true. We don't always know how much or how important the thoughts and voices of those we love are to our lives until they are gone. I lost both my parents at a very young age...when I look back it seems like I barely knew them and yet they knew me so well. Thanks for sharing...

A touching remembrance Susan, beautifully composed. In my experiences: whether you're sitting under a tree meditating, playing an instrument, or talking with another, there always seems to be a doorway that opens that encourages warmth love and thoughtfulness. Holiday blessings. rlc
