The Weight of Unspoken Goodbyes
there's a weight to unspoken goodbyes
they lay heavy on the heart
and bring up a multitude
of what if and whys
treat every person as if it will be
the last time you speak to them
just in case it might be
have no regrets added to grief
death doesn't always, even seldom
announce his imminent entrance
on the stage of our lives
he is insidiously silent
you will be thankful you were kind
not spewing accusations
or raising your voice
at last contact
death will not serve you a notice
or leave his calling card
so be kind even when
you must be forthright
then when the weight of no goodbye
falls heavy around your soul
you will know kindness lived
in the last words shared
forgiveness is the doorway to heaven. I hope to see you there, thank you, LaBelle, for your wisdom, understanding and love!
You made me think of my uncle I missed on my last pass by his home in Kentucky after his wife died. I miss calculated and it got too late for me to go back. I could hear him crying on the phone and I felt really bad.
But during his whole life he never went out of his way to see me like I did to see him when he retired at that Kentucky retreat. He died without my even knowing it except finding out through a cousin.
