Poem Artwork

... seagulls fighting, picking apart
what was my poem.  They tear,
slash, rip at noun and verb with
talons of correction until it is
barely recognizable as my own.

They spare little.  With one last
giggle of a job well done, they
pinwheel off into the sun, leaving
me to gather the pieces and try
one more time.  Stupid birds ...

Karla,
Truth be told, the majority of readers do not read poetry. It's a harsh reality. They don't know what they're missing! For this reason, publishers/agents are extremely critical of this genre. Love how you likened publishers to birds here. Very creative! Keep trying:)

I have to agree with Gene's review...
Some day...in the meantime...find yourself a different editor that believes in your work, as your work, and doesn't try to rewrite the ideas.

excellent analogy ... seagulls are scavengers ... there are so many poets, the sea is overflowing ... the "seagulls" pick poets like a mussel and drop it on a rock and consume its insides ...

Yes! If you're lucky or persistent enough to find a lead and not have to go the way of P.O.D. self-publishing which is sometimes just "Purgatory on Demand" it is probably best to take all the abuse an editor can throw at you and re-write. But you have to have a "lead" and persist; submitting blindly I have found doesn't work. Either get an agent (if you can) or have a special angle you can pursue to dig up the lead.
Or like me so far: self publish
Good luck...

i guess i will play the devils advocate a bit--i have to say that i had an editor who helped me with my memoir, "Show and Tell" we wrote and rewrote many times and I learned so very much-i became a much better writer. i didn't always decide to go with her help and suggestions but her work made my book better. I still found that most publishers now wont even talk to you if you don't have an agent (which is expensive), therefor i went to Publish America and i understand Lulu is good as well-anyway-holding my book in my hands was incredible

Poetry is one of the hardest genres to get published by anything other than vanity press or self publishing. Then again I guess the degree of difficulty in getting published also makes the rewards that much greater as well.

I fought the "big" boys in New York for over twenty years . . . Like Linda, I decided that if I were to ever hold a book of mine in my hands before I died, it would be self publishing that would get it there . . . I do not regret it one bit . . .

Your writing is wonderful. After submitting queries, proposal pkgs and manuscripts, I realized that if I ever wanted to be published...I'd have to do it myself... At least the first one... I will always continue to seek a publisher for my works; but if push comes to shove...I'll go the other route... Perhaps not as satisfying, but when that book is held in your hands....there is nothing more beautiful!!!! Good luck my friend... lindalaw

They ought to be glad that you can write; you definitely have the skill to be a published writer--and then some! You also have the added bonus of talent beyond compare in photography; you are brilliant! If I were a publisher looking for new talent, I'd snatch you up in a heartbeat; you're that good! Very well penned; BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin (and critic, not to mention, #1 fan!), Karen Lynn. :D X0X0X0X0

If there was an "America's Got Talent (For Authors)", you'd take the top prize, hands down! I mean it!! :)

Karla, I equate those seagulls to agents. Those of us who truly love writing finally manage to bounce back from the rejection to "gather up the pieces and try one more time."

An expressive write.
