The beginning of a new year has made me realize just how lonely I have become.

Loneliness

by Amber "V" Moonstone

1/05/10

Loneliness grabs a hold of you,
tearing your creativity in two
stealing your sleep with restlessness,
hovering like a dark cloud.

Loneliness is like an ache that has no name,
a sleep without rest,
a song without an end,
a poem that makes no sense.

Loneliness can change your life,
it makes you tired of the intolerance
it bleeds you of your energy
and it zaps your mind's ability to heal your pain.

Loneliness is curable,
it is a matter of stepping out of the box
that inhabits negative thoughts and feelings,
and vowing to stop this flow from affecting your life.

Being alone does not mean you are a loser, or
a lost soul that cannot function without another,
it meerly means that you are temporarily
flying solo until you have arrived at you final destination.

Many people think that they NEED to have someone,
think again, because in the end, you only have yourself.
Sometimes loneliness invades your life, but it can be good,
it can be a reminder that the world is at your disposal.

You have an open pallet to make your life
whatever you want  without anyone's interference.
So go out and change loneliness into
The best time of your life!

It's amazing to read the many reviews below--which I did--in which your poem "Loneliness" struck a responsive chord, even as it did with me. Several commentaries noted the distinction between loneliness and being alone. Strangely, many of us can be lonely in the midst of thousands and not be lonely at all when we are by ourselves in solitude.

To need to feel connected is nearly as strong as the two basic drives that move us: survival and reproduction. And when we are unconnected, we do indeed suffer loneliness.

On a social level, we can give thanks for the community of Authorsden. On a personal level, we are never alone for God is never farther than a prayer away.

To be an effective write, one needs to touch another's feelings and emotions. "Loneliness" is thoughtful and provocative. Good work, Amber!

the Right Person.

A great poem which I can relate TO.

Emotionally felt, Amber...watch your surroundings and let in some more light when it is available...loneliness is counteracted by music and incense...stargazing and moon watching, but you know this...be well...

Love,
Sage

Being alone beat the heck out of being abandoned. Sometimes, solitude give us the opportunity of a moment of peaceful reflection, kind of taking store of what we had, what we have and the promise of what we will get and give.

Such an honest and beautiful write, Amber...I've been there a time or two...still visit that place from time to time. But you know what? You are a healer...and you know better than anyone...stay positive...keep pressing forward...all that's good lies ahead...keep believing, Vivian.

You are a natural healer, Amber - of self and others around you. I love the turn in this poem after the third stanza: first you give us some wonderful analogies of the drain that loneliness can be; then you indicate how to salve and solve it. You are very acute when it comes to understanding of the human psyche and its condition and indeed it is essential to know how the mind/feelings are functioning in order to begin to "put things right". Root causes need to be first ascertained. Peeps below me have readily identified the intrinsic differences between loneliness and solitude; we can construe that the former is perhaps a state that is imposed upon us; the later perhaps a personal choice. Both are attitudes of the heart and mind, rather than an imposition of circumstance or condition. And people are temperamentally disposed to handle such things in different ways. Goodness me, you have certainly struck a chord with me here and I could wax lyrical (or boring!!) on this subject all night. I'll cut to the quick and say that both loneliness and solitude tend to come in phases/cycles and be short-lived. We live one moment at a time. The trick comes with finding empowerment and creativity during such times of perceived haitus - rather than pain or defeating listlessness. We can think of the seed sleeping in glorious isolation in the stony winter ground, all that potential locked within. Or the unseen dominion and exercise of power of the industrious Queen Bee! :)) Funnily enough, you remind me to post a poem that has not yet seen the light of day, though I have quoted a little on one of your pages before, I think. When I think about it, I have been a "loner" all my life and am never happier than when alone with my own thoughts; and I'm happily alone in a crowd. May this brief period or "gulf" be a stepping stone into a fast-flowing stream of fulfilling interaction for you, Amber - one in which you feel completely at home and thriving. Thank you for this xx

It is true we all equate lonliness with being alone but if we have one person in the world who truly cares about us and loves us be it child, spouse, lover or friend than we can draw on that when the lonlies are the strongest. Well written Amber.

BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THE CREATOR ALLOWS THOSE PERIODS THAT SOME CALL 'LONLINESS'...I BELIEVE PERSONALLY THAT THIS TIME CAN BE THE MOST BLESSED TIME OF OUR LIVES. IF WE 'LISTEN' TO HIS VOICE AND THE WORDS OF LOVE AND ENCOURAGEMENT HE IS CONSTANTLY WHISPERING TO US, LONLINESS BECOMES A TIME OF UNIQUE ENRICHMENT AND GROWTH THAT CANNOT BE GOTTEN ANYWHERE ELSE. YOU KNOW WHAT THE WORD SAYS...'ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD...' I ENJOYED THIS WORK...IT IS WRITTEN WELL AND INSPIRES. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS.

a sad poem My dear Friend
Loneliness can be filled in like an empty pocket
by other friends standing by, wanting to help
if it was just one pocket at a time,
wanting to let you know that they are there too
ready yo help you, to keep one's mind preoccupied
Love & Peace be with you

The closing of thie emotional profession
is the bounty of love's hope
lonely can bring us surrnder & stillness
but the ache sounds so terrible
I don't think I would like to experience lonely
though I am one whom prefers to be alone...oddly
I can grasp the differences
You embrace yourself & give yourself Love
your personal bounties...
Embracing You...

Amber, your thoughtful poem has depth. It relates a problem and its negative effects, but then hope rises out of it as you see a more positive outlook from the malady. Your fourth stanza states the cure: "stepping out of your box that inhabits negative thoughts and feelings."

I have been told that loneliness is a state of mind and the only way to avoid it is (to do what you said) put your mind on other things. Reading is a wonderful way to overcome loneliness. When the mind is actively steered toward other busy thoughts, it cannot labor on the negative ones such as loneliness.

Perk up, my friend. Better days are ahead. (And I do empathize with you because I've gone through such moments myself.)
