Famiglia (For Paul Fariello)

I wrote this for my maternal Grandfather, Paul Fariello. He was born here from Italian immigrant parents from Bari, Apulia, and worked up from a pushcart to have his own businesses. My family has alot to thank him for, and one day, I hope to write a book about him and the area where I live.

Poem Artwork

Edges rough where work settled into big hands

toiling on the lines of a face still handsome

much came of this one life, this one man

a father, a business man, a grandfather, a friend

Family of children, all four were girls

but they still did the chores like the boys he hoped for

a stepson to come home and be one of his own

a fisherman, an iceman, a bus driver, a boxer

Into all of us it was instilled that family is first

with a big family together making their way

hard times don't matter, it's good times that stay

a produce man, a store owner, a gardener, a dancer

Strumming his guitar and singing all day

to Lazy Mary and Louis Prima in his own special way

a joyful song was what he gave to we children around him

a gangster, a joker, a rebel, a teddy bear

Long nights in Brooklyn and Manhattan dancing away

the Roseland Ballroom was where they played

non-stop and on-top they won some awards

a partier, a lover, a charmer, a man

To this day whenever we sit down to eat

at another of our big Italian feasts

it's him that we think of and speak of with love

because we know that he watches with a wink from above

Hi,

I was looking for my name in Google and I found this page.
I know that my grandfather has lived in Bari too. So I just have a question. Does your grandfather had a brother wich name was Francesco ?

Michelle,

A wonderful portrait of a fine man. This generation could learn a great deal from old school-old world gentlemen such as your grandfather.

Michelle,
I too had an Italian father and grandfather(who sadly passed before I met him). Some of the happiest days of my life were spent with that side of the family in Pennsylvania. The food, oh my gosh the food, that my aunt Nina made. What a chef she was to us. My cousins stomped the grapes and they had casks of dark delicious homemade wine that they served at dinnertime. Thank you for the great memories Michelle. It is a tribute to your writing and to your upbringing that you value your heritage and seek to proudly share memories of that dear man, Paul Fariello, in such a good way! Somewhere he is beaming with pride, hearing his story, and knowing that you turned out well. Rockie Coppolella

Thank you for sharing this fine slice of your family and culture; and this is a great tribute to your grandfather, Michelle. It credits a man of many abilities and achievements. Love, hugs, and best wishes to you,

so touching and rich from your heart -- it reinforces what I have always said about the greatest compliment anyone can be given -- "to be remembered often and lovingly, when you are no more, when you are but a memory"(JMW) -- a tribute and compliment of the first order to your grandfather Michelle -- JMW

Michelle, this is truly a fine poem, rich in thought and texture from its superb opening line (reminded me of Heaney) to its final joyful last.

Really good writing... how wonderful to have such warm memories of your grandfather; and especially nice that you found a way to let us, the reader, envision his persona so well. I'm sure he's smiling. lindalaw

Love it! To be able to look back at our ancestors with love and pride in their accomplishments and draw strength and inspiration from them is a blessing when we have it. My first and last books were about my own father and my grand father men I respected and loved. You captured not only your grandfather's memory but his character and soul in this write and I am sure he would love the way you honored him.

My grandfather, too, hailed from Bari, and it seems so strange to me at times when I think that he and my grandmother left Italy to live in America...and now, here I am living in Milano. Lovely tribute, Michelle

A perfect portrait of family ties and a wonderful, loving tribute to your maternal grandfather Paul. Tracing one's lineage gives one such a familial point of connection to pride. The way you describe your maternal grandfather is like a blueprint of those family members patterned after him through Italian genetics of which you are all tempered with and hearing that you honor him at your Italian feasts is solid proof of a family staying together for many generations to come Michelle...Blessed Be.

Love,
Sage
