Inspired by a painting of the same name by artist Will Barnet, 2001- I am a big fan of his work and the stories they tell and he is such an inspiration to me in my poetry.

Poem Artwork

she promised he could walk the cat

as if she had a right to say

who walked and who stayed

sleeping

holding her hand created worlds

of security and strange powers

even if the cat disagreed

hung over his small arm

edgy

isn't that what a mother does?

yes, she was sure it was

though it had been a long time

since she had held his hand like

this

there were others-- so many

and he sometimes thought

they knew him better than his busy mom

ever could, knew the way the cat

sang

there were others-- so many

and she sometimes thought

they knew him better than his fragile mom

ever could, knew of his conversations with

cats

only cats ever understood him

his gentle touch and small talk

and they could read each others movements

in the size of each others

eyes

was she even really there they both wondered

or was her shadow the thing left moving

against the walls and the wooden floors

crouching among the petunias of idealized

lives

Very interesting piece, Michelle ... a unique and endearing relationship between child and animal ... sometimes we are understood better through silence, and animals seem to know instinctively what we are all about. An excellent write! Hugs, Elizabeth :)

The writers choice of the petunia, instead of another genus, is intriguing, and in and of itself (to this reader) represents an insight into the interpretive gift of the writer. It is not a stretch for me to construe the requirements of the flower similar to the needs of the child/agonist.

Your interpretation of the painting, Michele, in my opinion, is uniquely conceptualized and, to this reader, clearly traces a child's need for security and comfort (on one hand) fused with a desire to reach out, touch, explore, and understand those things that he can seemingly befriend and prevail over, (on the other hand).

This is intelligent and lingers as a sweet fragrance.

Blessings ...

That shadow is a big one-it hovers in the background all our lives. I'd like to go back to my toddler years to know what I was thinking(can't remember before the age of four). Only remember that push and pull between independence and dependence and some invisible weight that seemed to bear down on my mother. "Was she even really there...?" You've really entered the consciousness of both child and mother. Love the intimacy between the cat and child, both being rather small with voices seldom heard and having an intuitive understanding. Brilliant write...

What a great painting and I thank you so much for putting me on to it. And it's some tale you tell about the characters on that canvass, which have come to even greater life in your imagination. I'm looking foward to what else is in your gallery.

WONDERFUL WRITE...SETS ONE THINKING ANALYZING YOUR INSPIRATION; THE PAINTING. I CONCLUDE WHETHER ONE LOOKS AT THE CHILD OR MOTHER'S ASPECT...THE CAT, TO ME, WOULD JUST AS SOON AS NOT BEEN TAKEN FOR THAT WALK(SMILE). THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. JOYCE
