Based on a painting of the same name by Jeffrey Terreson, oil on canvas

http://www.howardmandville.com/Pages/Artist%20pages/terreson.html

His other work can be found at the above site along with the painting featured here. The simplicity, detail and understated movement in his work really allows the poet's mind to run away, lol.

Poem Artwork

i rode off on his hard sweaty back

solid and warm between my legs

bare back-- yes, i was naked

from this pale flesh

to this separate soul

and

back again

gone the thick protective layers

before the some other nothing came

nothing but some- any -

quiet sought

i'll always be running free besides

no reins-- no rider-- into the everlasting

and no ropes to hold back

these old wings i was born with

spreading wide and living full

Isadora Duncan once said

before those scarves and fast cars

that

"You were wild here once--

don't let them tame you"

don't let them, i tell you

don't

can't still the restless wandering song of my dreams

dreams filled with winding roads and our silence

salt of the earth folks and small town all-night diners

those wild freedom painted ponies blazing fast

carrying nothing but the stillness of peace and light

don't cage me

and promise me

gnarled ropes tied

on a rickety white picket fence

you built with the wood left over

from your discarded dreams

hell no--

the quiet sought

can't be bought or sold

but found in the broken pocket mirror

and the face staring back

at me

truth as naked as the rider of the horse -- it whispers in between the galloping gate and the wind whistling by the ear -- expression, to run free as the wild horses -- your delivery is perfectly marvelous in this rendering Michelle -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

Great write of wild riding, but cowboys wore jeans for a reason, and it wasn't tranquil... ;-)

To me, Michelle, one of your best. Happily, you'll never
run out of paintings, and we'll contine to share the beauty
of your poetic interpretations in such memorable lines as...

don't cage me
and promise me
gnarled ropes tied
on a rickety white picket fence
you built with the wood left over
from your discarded dreams

Uniquely Michelle. -gene.

Gosh ... i haven't heard the name Isadora Duncan for so many years. probably since college. She was a force that woman. And in my opinion the innovator and performer of something totally unique.

Michele, the first strophe is unique in its imagery and I like how you repeated the title. I enjoyed the format of seven stanzas, seven being a number of completeness or a kind of finality.

The sparcity of punctuation at first was disquieting, but when I visualized Isadoras freedom of movement in her interpretations I saw the metaphor between the dancer and the horse.

Also the sixth stanza is certainly (in my opinion) the strongest poetic parameter for your interpretation (not only for the horse but also for the human spirit) and, also, one of those special literary moments that enter into you and stay. Well done!

Blessings ...

Ah Michelle...as always you apply words to paper as an artist puts brush to canvas...lovingly and with such passionate grasp of your thoughts and ideas. I truly love the way you offered this one to us and I savored each line...well done.
