Small pebbles we praise the God of the skies
beneath them wide reaching stone and dirt carved
out from the rumbling heat of the planet’s core
our distant souls touched by the echo of silence
and begging the trees and gardens for a return
to when our footprints remembered for us the way
Oh, you remember then
Oh, you remember when
rainbows of birds opened their angel wings out
onto the darker sides of our visions of ourselves
hiding with the vulture’s shadows on our bare backs
two fading silhouettes flung against the canyon floor
the hunger for love’s promises made on drifting leaves
our wild mating calls drowned out by the river’s run
there where once your sweet song melted winter snows
deep snows in passing drifts and upon the level sides
how warm there shadowed by pine trees and your frame
a breath by breath in time with the bellowing of the wind
where it was too smooth on the hill and my foot slipped
we dove headlong in our weakened nature’s
never-ending fall from grace
never-ending love remains
