This poem was inspired by two things- a Connie Winters painting and my friend, Rob Rodway, who also has a poet's soul and hand, but he just needs a slight push in the right direction to show this side of himself to the world- thanks for being a great friend to me, Rob~ love ya~

Sleep well, for old memories come in deepest dreams

and quiet passions lie beside the flow of ancient streams

the steps are there upon the edge of a lover's walk

where wild birds fly and even grey skies can talk

though such words mean little to the rising sun

full of himself and of the day begun

A praise of beauty in nature's subtle grin

a beauty that is called upon from a soul within

not the surface and its false and flash array

of gaudy glories that only the eyes replay

but those memories made of the lasting kind

and to which a romantic's soul shall bind

Moreso the cloud-patterned winding streams

where water ripples and daylight gleams

and boats line up around the bend

awaiting husky fishermen to attend

to the rocking of their unsettled bones

still listening for a sea song's echoed tones

Lamp posts high look over a curved dirt lane

where farmer's carts and cows hold reign

hedgegrows scarf-like hug the sides

the passing season's time it bides

through summer's drought and winter's frost

no heed to the bargain or the cost

From the white-washed houses idyllic view

gather happy memories once they knew

during the passing of varied lives within

balanced both with love and sin

but if friends we carry both in hand and heart

the bags we trundle are light as we depart

Gray skies talk to me, too. One of my fondest memories was a rowboat ride on a lead behind a friend's house on a quiet autumn day to the iver and back. Peace personified.

The painting compliments the verse, the verse compliments the painting - all around beauty, Michelle. Well done.

A little birdie told me your birthday is coming up soon? If so, may I be the first to wish you Happy Birthday? Gonna be 21, right? =] Whatever the age/rage, make it your best EVer. =]

Dear Michelle, The painting is inspiring and reminds me of some area I have known. Your poem is very deep and also remind Jesus story with his disciples. After a while everyone was exausted and threw dear belongings. During World War II, we too threw our belongings and finally we were happy to be light. Love Emile

Well, I liked the hell out of this poem, Michelle / It took the very painting, which was magnificent in itself, and went with it / Your imagination was superb, the rhyming was excellent and the overall piece of work just warmed this old heart of mine.

Michelle,
Not only does the character of the poem speak but yours, too, you are one and the same, full of insight, longing and a deep respect for the natural world and a life away from city lived in rural quiet and dare I say bliss.

Good to see you post again.

John
