Based on the painting, "Great Ustyug," oil on canvas, 1993, by a very talented Russian painter named Alexander Kopeyko-- I think I might be in love with his art now, lol, so here is a link if you are interested :)

Poem Artwork

desertion at last from the crumbling of human existence

far better when their soiled footsteps turn for home

then the river banks belong once again to the common

the bird, the fish and the fisherman-- more fish than man

even with no one here, the water still talks to itself

much more to say when the only remaining listeners

are those with ears too familiar to hear much at all

just jumbled parts and scraps of a river neighborhood

humanity's visits are a cacophony of chatter and arrogance

these civilized creatures deaf except for the rattle of their minds

tantrums abound slinging frustration for possessions yet obtained

when in the cracks of his soles are the treasures of all the earth

too much seen of random lives for the stoic river to be silent

to ponder upon if man or beast wears a coat of wisdom

or if the instinct of the undomesticated bares no falsehoods

more respect than shown by those in fine suits of clothes

river calm now for its resting starts when pulling in the sun

and when the birds steal discarded silk ribbons for their floors

the fish mock with swishing tails the tombs of cities and houses

knowing the people's desertion to be the flourishing of their lives

This is excellent, Michelle. You have echoed my feelings about the relationship between humanity and nature. Humans could learn so much if they showed concern for the things that REALLY matter. Once again you have captured the essence of this painting as well.

Hi Michelle, you are absolutely right! Sometimes, people forget to think of ecological balance in the pursuit of their own happiness. It would be such a wonderful experience if other creatures are appreciative of human presence instead of being targets and losing their tranquility. Very meaningful piece.

Blessings to you,
Sheri

Really liked this! The "real" world goes on around us, while we live ours, all too often, totally unaware of it while struggling with the completely artificial world that humanity has created. I was reading some of your profile, and when reading the music you like, could not help but suggest that you might like the wonderfully eclectic Celtic works of Loreena McKennit. Just a suggestion. May you always walk within the brightest and softest of the light,
Jim

As usual, you have filled in the unseen, adding the interaction of humanity of the scene.

I cast my vote for this poem being one of the best "green" writes of the year. Your perspective brings the message home even more powerfully.
One line popped out at me, '...when in the cracks of his soles are the treasure of the earth'. Indeed. Fine, Michelle...Lin

Your ability to spread out the two-dimensionality of the art and wrap it around you in three dimensions and then channel the mind of the artist is very unique. You do have a special gift Michele that seems to be, on this site anyway, yours alone.

Michelle, you've brought the painting to life for me with your words, but we will never see the reality, because the moment we revisit the garden returned to its original Eden state, the cycle of destruction will begin anew. As always, beautiful writing. ~leslie

I especially love the second last verse. Something I regularly ponder myself. In a simpler form this poem would make a lovely ballad. Very nice piccy too. Hugs, J'nia

You find a great deal here, this painting has special impact for you, Michelle; I don't pretend to understand every 'point' you make but the overall effect of the poem touches me.
