A grandfather and his grandchild
both sitting on the dock fishing.
They are into a world of their own.
The grandfather
looks over his shoulder at his grandson
whose life seems to have just begun.
He is young and curious,
and his life is full of fun and opportunities.
Oh, how his grandchild
reminds him so much of his own childhood.
He wonders if he should tell him some war stories.
He wants to tell him all about how he fought in the wars,
and all the medals that he had received.
He turns to look at his grandson,
whose eyes are now focused on the water.
His little hands grip firmly the fishing pole,
his little face is filled with great expectation.
"Perhaps not today!" thought the grandpa.
Someday he will take out his uniform and show his grandson
each one of those medals that he had received,
so his grandson will be proud of him too.
As for now, the biggest accomplishment for his grandson
is to catch the biggest fish, ever,
and shows it to the world!

This reminds me of the two beat up old suitcases stored in a closet. One is memorabilia and letters from Dad's days in the Army and the other is the same material from my father-in-law's service. "Precious memories, how they linger .... "

What a precious alone time between the grandfather and the grandson, both enjoying fishing! Great photo and poetry!
Had your grandparents participated in wars to protect their country and got some medals, they would have been proud too.
If I may guess correctly, your grandparents may have been in the 1920's during the great depression period after the WWI. I was not there, so I cannot possibly feel the pain that they felt.
I believe wars are man-made due to differences in cultures and religions, and when one country provokes the other in disagreement, the Patriots would come to life to defend their country's rights.
There is nothing wrong with going to wars. Grandparents and parents should never feed their own pains to their grandchildren. We must leave it for our children and grandchildren to explore their own worlds, live the time and lives that belong to them. To tell the grandchildren that they are just waiting for their deaths is depressing and pessimistic! I am somehow in disagreement with you on this.
In my opinion, the grandchildren should be taught to stand proud of their own country, to believe in themselves and stand up for their rights and not just to await death.
No one should sit around to wait for their death. As long as one lives, one should make themselves useful to their country and their fellow citizens.
A really heartfelt poem about an event that rarely happens these days. And a special message about the misunderstandings that can come from war.
Thankfully, my grandparents didn't participate in the great wars but they both were beaten down by hard work and the Great Depression. I recall fishing with my grandfather when he told us that he was… "Just waiting for the good Lord to take me away." He hoped to catch a big catfish with his chalk line once again like he had many times in his youth. But he caught our hearts that day with his pronouncement that he was no longer excited about living life like we were.
The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
