An explination of how the shamrock became a grand heritage symbol for Ireland...

Poem Artwork

As is documented, St. Patrick came to Ireland to spread the word of God; but first he wanted the cooperation of the Celtic Kings. Thus he came to Tara, Hill of Ancient
Kings, knowing their approval would give credence to his teachings. He explained the Trinity to them, God the Father,
Jesus The Son, The Holy Spirit, thusly:

SHAMROCK

Shamrock green and shimering
in fields of ancient domain
Kings of the land prospering
grand life for Celts to sustain.

Came then God’s man showering
faith for all who would believe.
King’s approval hovering,
Celtic souls would have reprieve.

Patrick, saintly, wandering
the land for hearts to unlock;
thus plucked three-leaf quivering
The Trinity as Shamrock.

*Irish Poetry Form: Ae freslighe (ay fresh lee):

Each stanza is a quatrain of seven syllables. Lines one and three rhyme with a triple (three syllable)  rhyme word and two and four use a double (two syllable) rhyme word…i.e. (3) shimering, quivering, showering, etc. and (2) domain, sustain, believe, etc. The form usually tells a story within three or four stanzas, and the poem should end with the first syllable word ,or the complete line, that it began with.

Thanks for this, Jackie. I love both the telling and the form - has a wonderful upbeat quality. I like how you have made such an appropriate match here. As canny and delightful as I know the Irish to be, and steeped in culture and heritage. A delightful combination. Kate xx
