Because we missed the light, at the far end of the tunnel, it’s all over now, which is better I suppose, then being buried under, though it would have been well worthwhile had we somehow struggled through, never mind the darkness, or our fears, our tell-tale hearts would have found us except we forgot how to recognize each other in the dark.

I would shuffle the line breaks a little, but what do I know. Excellent poem.
this poem resonates, a torch in the dark field of fear. William Stafford has a good poem about travelling through the dark.
There's an irish writer whose book is called 'reading in the dark,,
set in the context of the north of ireland's 'troubles'.
I like fred astaire's 'dancing in the dark' most of all.
