My Notes from a Seminar

As an undergrad, I was often in over my head. It took a while before I got the drift of some of UCLA's finer professors. I know this is longer than my usual poems. Bear with me!

Poem Artwork

Consider the garden’s multitudinous weeds,

Untended in a time of drought.

How they strangle cherished flowers,

Those lying low without sunshine,

Tiny, bent, and struggling to rise from little spouts.

Inexperienced, you try pulling dry weeds

Only to find that weeds (like bad deeds, you know)

Break off leaving roots.

They multiply, reach for the sky,

Wafting armies of seeds that fly and take root where

They will be most likely to rampage bounteously

—Hear them laughing?

The vigorous weeds spread into new patches

Of annoyance.

Wise gardeners rethink their attack,

Starting with the preparation of the soil,

Allowing ample watering time to soak and soften.

Now how easy is removal of Nature’s misfits? The good gardener finds

Every step easier with such forethought,

Tackling the tallest offender, yanking open a clearing,

Excavating the site for future miracles

Filling with the right blooms in the right places

Where had been a blank and cluttered waste land.

Are there remaining questions?

Why yes, this is the seminar on the writing process.

What made you ask?

Perhaps we would do well to tackle metaphor.

Your metaphor works well here. A writer may often have trouble finds his/her own weeds. As a professor of academic writing for too many years worth mentioning, I have much experience with this and have learned over the years to "weed my own garden". Many thanks for this enlightening poem.

I find weeds to be nature's garden and can't fathom why people are so adamant about killing weeds in their lawns. It's the weeds that make the lawns green during times of drought and rebound when grass is frozen.

But I can understand removing weeds from a garden so that chosen vegetable and flower plants have a chance against the more virulent weed varieties taking advantage of your water and fertilizer.

I tried to look back for the "writing exercise," but I always failed on those esoteric professorial lessons in writing, because I was just more straightforward than that.
