This poem was inspired by my childhood in Imperial Beach, CA and by my amazing mother.

Poem Artwork

Mama taught me sea rules:

Dive under monstrous waves

No flailing over or through them.

Gauge waves as they form, lifting the ocean like

Whales coming to surface

Except the entire horizon swells,

Rising.

      Rising.

                       RISING.

Commit and paddle with all you've got,

Shoot down the face,

Exult in salt-water stinging your eyes.

Embrace wind and billow, rushing, crushing,

Hear Neptune's raputurous roar.

And sometimes the noise was me

Yawping into the fabulous fury,

And sometimes--oh sweet memory--

Mama and I swooped together.

Landlocked here now how i miss surf sounds,

Sough and sigh, backbeat to Mama's

Favorite lullaby.

I really enjoyed reading this, remembering Mom.
You have brought a lot of wonderful feelings and memories back to us with this.

Good to see you posting again. And I see you are missing your long life on the coast. But I believe that there is snow this time of year making Arkansas beautiful. I miss snow, but not slogging through it for months. ;-)

We lived at the beach, too, but my mom was deathly afraid of the ocean, but she never let me become like that, she let me swim alone when very young! As well as surf, water ski & dive as I got older, while she maintained her distance. Good write about an ocean on an opposite shore than mine...--e--

Eileen, like you, I have fond memories of body surfing in Southern California, mostly Newport or Huntington Beach. I even had a 1940 Ford pick-up, converted to a 'woody wagon.' Thanks for the memory.
