this is a wonderful story regarding object lessons Bonnie -- it also brought back memories of my skating days and an old Melanie song, "I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you gotta brand new key -- I think that we should get together and try them out you see"

You are so blessed to have such loving and beautiful memories of your father! I never owned a pair of skates...never skated...never did anything when I was young...and now that I am old I try to do things everyday I can...because I missed so much...a whole childhood I know of... guess that's why I'm such a giggling girlie girl .... I love your stories so much... hugs, lindalaw

Thanks for the memory...I have a scar because I skated without tightening the skates! I had lost my key. Precious memory you have shared
I'm glad Georg explained what a skate key did, as that was my next question...we used skateboards & bicycles to get around at the shore...maybe it was a girl thing, skates...e
Oh! that key, the roller-skaters which one could enlarge as our feet became bigger, although, we didn't have helmets, elbows and knee's padding...and those skates weighed a ton!
Thanks for the memories.
Once again you warm heart and soul with such a beautiful story of fathers and their love. As a father and a grandfather our roles often differ from those of women, we are often forced to find ways to impart knowledge and rules to safeguard our children in more conventional ways. At times with firmness, lecture, dissappointing looks etc but always in such a way that our children never doubt for a second that we love them.
The memories carry us through don't they? I have some beautiful memories from Nonna, I loved these lines, thank you for sharing

It's a funny-looking key. This reminds me of some of the old coins in funny shapes from ancient China that I have bought in ebay.
I woudn't mind having one of this for collection purposes. I think it's extraordinary!!! Oh, perhaps there's lots of them around but I haven't seen one yet. Do you think I can still get one like this?? - I think I'm beginning to sound dumb! Where can I find one like this?
A beautiful and heart warming write Bonnie
You may not believe this but I still have one too
I sprayed a enamel black placed a leather strip
through the handle hole and wear it around my neck
whenever I want to feel "KOOL", specially when people ask me,
what is that around my neck?....
I respond, "Don't you know" and they really don't
Peace & love be with you
Your Dad sounds like a treasure that every little girl or boy should have. Your poem really brought back memories Bonnie. Skipping over cracks in the sidewalk, running home crying with skinned knees and palms, and that skate key on a grosgrain ribbon around my neck. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I can smell the iodine my Mom would liberally spread on my boo boos.
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.

This touched me deeply - my mom has been giving me a few of my dad's things . . . beautiful. Thank you so much for this tender poem!!
