         Indigo Nights

I sit
hugging knees with bare arms,
in hibernation
watching the fire's flames
lick upward towards air
as if greed was its shame.

Smoke spirals, soot stains
and coal crumble cascading crazily
inward shifting to scorch remains
that will perish by morning.

And warmth will rise 
like a vapor leaving behind 
a chill to cling like frost
drapes on a budded rose.

And I
am left alone to embrace
the cold once more.
