Picture painted/drawn by my uncle
Guy Young

*everything happens in stages

Poem Artwork

Fought disease and rough seas
Just so I could be
See my mind couldn’t comprehend
Such a grotesque thing
And they speak of God as if they knew him
Chains broke whipped I bleed
My blood seeps through the soil
And flower the trees
Where I watch my brothers and sisters
Become leaves
if you can imagine....and see
the anger hurt pain like a battered
spring
And “you” say what that got to do with me?

Time after time we get accused of a crime
Being uncivilized as I am
And again with the chains and massacring scenes
water hoses, dogs and hunting sprees
mothers body is a wonderland theme
Taking my father’s manhood ~ as if it never was
In a world he doesn’t know good
Offering solutions, in dropped off pollution
That covers our neighborhood
Then perceive us to be
Crazy out-of-control beings
All struggling for a need ~in this reality
And true that we all just want to feel good
pushing your solution in my viens
spreadin like a locomotive train
just so I could be
And “you” say hay, what dat all got to do with me?

Nigga I ain’t the first teen
had things go wrong wit me
I ain’t knew none of them people from back in the day
Gots too many troubles of my own anyway
All I’ve seen is what other people dream and
What dat gots ta do wit me?
My father wasn’t taken He just had to leave
So what all dat got ta do wit me?
I ain’t got straight hair or blue/green eyes
Or idolized……
and damn momma I didn’t know love
Would fill-up my insides
when I just wanted to feel alright?!?
Slave eyes and slave minds and
……….what all dat got ta do wit me?
what it got ta do wit me
...and my baby????

*how many different voices?

A truly down to earth heartfelt write, Mitzi, and the artwork is captivating.

One would think that since mankind has been around so long already, every unique voice could be heard - but it seems we truly do have a long way to go yet - and I often wonder if we will ever get there.

Mitzi girl...I guess I have to agree with Kate Burnside, as I
could never understand prejudice and its cruelties, from the time I
opened my eyes to look around at the world I lived in. I'm white, but
have often been ashamed to admit the horrendous things done by my so-called "white crowd." In that New System to arrive soon here
on earth, ALL will love and respect one another, just as the people of one certain religion here and now do. And as God intended it to be. BTW...kudos to your extremely talented artist uncle.
I wish you a happy and successful 2005, sister, and God bless you!

"Just so I could be"...truly sorry, Mitzi, that there is such mindless prejudice in this world, where we are all blood-brothers and co-dependent. Your words are sooo true: we are all a product of the legacy of our inheritance and none of us an island, however much we might think it. Love the words of The Blind Boys of Alabama: "None of us is free, if one of us is chained, then none of us is free"... as to your question, my answer would be: ongoing generations of "blacks" and "whites", but who is doing the questioning and answering is quite a different thing altogher. Race can further subdivide through culture and circumstance, too. Visceral and mind-blowing as usual, Mitzi. Thank you for telling it like it is. LOL Kate xx

Powerful and true...the human race struggles to push the "problems" of others away but in some way, shape or form - everyone is part of the problem and eventually the solution...

wow...
Such a show of independance thru these words.......LIVING IN THE NOW!
How many people get caught up in shadows that have nothing to do with their present reality......we are masters of our own destinies......
This write screams......responsiblity.....but with pride, even if circumstances are an anchor....
This is so well done, it roars......it questions......it declares.....
you are a powerful poet......
bravo!
