Another fancy hotel, in a big city
That neither of us will see
I keep saying I’m going to quit this
I’m getting too old to be your groupie
But then the phone rings
And you say,’ I’ll be in a town close to you’
And I’m on a plane
Off for another weekend of heaven and hell
How many has it been
In the past ten years
Too many to count
We laugh about the night we met
Back in 1987
You said ‘I can only offer you one night
No promises of tomorrow
A musician’s life doesn’t allow for tomorrows’
I didn’t like your honesty
I wanted pretty lies
I wanted you to say you would take me with you
But I looked in your eyes
And I knew I would take what you offered
We spent that night loving, talking, laughing
You told me your dreams
And I told you my hopes
We explored the reality of the world
And our bodies
The next morning you asked me if I needed to pack
You wanted me to go on with you for
A day or two
That day or two lasted for five years
Five years of nameless hotels in nameless towns
Hot sweaty nights of love
And long parties that lasted until dawn
Sometimes dawn of the next week
It was a hard and wonderful life
And we shared it completely
While it lasted
We didn’t break up
There was no dramatic parting
No harsh words or painful endings
My life and my failures took me one way
Your life and your successes took you another
By the time I pulled my life together
There was too much between
Where you were and where I was
That was ten years ago
That one night stand goes on and on
Different town, different hotel
Same two people with dreams and hopes
Sharing our thoughts and our bodies
Until we see each other
The next time
For another one night stand

Dear Sue; I sense a whole lotta painful sighs in this one. You called it love-making. I wonder what he called it. Hanley
when i said i wasn't successful,i really meant its hard to put a relationship like this into words that doesn't change the way it is...if you saw the play 'same time next year' it just about sums us up.
