As many of you know, many of my poems and stories are about imaginary characters, behaviors, and situations
(or those that have been altered beyond recognition}. I like to think that I usually serve Truth in the larger sense, but there is no getting around the fact that I frequently take advantage of a writer's right to lie. You should know that there are no lies in this poem. It is the truth and
nothing but the truth. {Notice I left out "the whole truth." Hafta wait for the book.:) Not that any of us know the whole truth.
Hope you feel this. xOx Phyllis xOx

Shut UP!! the one who calls herself Mother screams.
SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP!!!
If I put my hands on my ears, she makes me
go outside and cut a switch.
A GREEN one!! she yells.
Other kind doesn't hurt enough.
On lucky days, she sends me to you.
The little, falling-down house I am
learning to love.
Even love the noise the rain makes
because the roof is tin.
Buckets set out to catch drips.
Show up looking like I have been
crying, you gather me to you and whisper
Hush, child, hush.
Everything will be all right.
Sweetest word I've ever heard.
Gentlest touch I ever feel.
If there is a God, you are my mother.
Cut a switch? Why when a clothes hanger is handy. The metal ones, not the plastic ones. Great poem. I climbed a tree and there God hugged me. Love it. Liz
This is an heart-tugging piece Pea, I was lucky to have a mom that was kind, but I knew several kids that did not...this will touch many in different ways. Powerful write!
This is so beautiful, Pea! Good enough to give me the need to comment in spite of being sick today. Compassion that wraps its arms around a hurting friend is priceless! The pic also is memorable, a perfect companion to your words.
Love,
Connie
Pea this is true and real. I years gone by Mother's oftened suffered from mental illness or just wore out from too many children, and abusive husbands and all too sadly the children became the abused. The few lucky ones did have grandmothers, aunts or just kindly neighbours that offered some relief but for some there was no escape. Sad but true.

LOVE that picture. Looks like some of the skies I saw on my first REAL storm chase yesterday! =]
And the mood: dark and foreboding at the beginning, filled with love and hope at the end. I have felt both, and much prefer the light coming out after the storm.
EXCELLENT piece. Nay, shall go beyond that: b r i l l i a n t.
Sad but real, raw and honest. I find this poem very soul-stirring, Pea. I have been saved by angels on many occasions so I can relate to what you have expressed in this fine poem. Love and best wishes,
