Huh?

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Not to suggest the holiday season’s Black Friday (hard to believe, but this year it included Thursday as well) is governed by a succubus, or an armored demon, or even sham-laden profiteering, but 21st century acceptance of this time of year begs the serious question…

Poem Artwork
Huh?
by Odin Roark

On this day at the store-front of depression
That place insecurity seems destined to occupy
Stands the pathetic
The guarded
The fearful
The unprepared about to find out
What’s ugly

Here like steeds from Hell
Legs and knees positioned before the starting gate
Aggression prepared to grapple for prizes
War-like eyes focus on the store manager’s countdown

Doors fling open

Oh how they run
How they blame the other person
For making them who they are
As elbows crack heads
Hands yank hair from follicles
And blood drips willingly

As we watch TV’s aftermath news
We ponder with sympathy…

Is such a Friday
Part of holiday merriment
Or merely pent up purging
Where anger and resentment
Find nowhere to go
Save some destination of gullibility
A delusion of happiness
Trickery's doves in a hat
Taking flight inside
The Mall

Definition of Black Friday -- Something to avoid like the plague; disaster; Senseless squabbling and extremely lack of common courtesy
Therefore, I have never gone shopping on B.F.
This is well-written, Odin. I like it for your finesse with words and phrases.
Happy Day after Thanksgiving!

I refuse to participate. Wait for a calmer current, or the end of sales. Bob

Let the games begin... consumers driven as if before the whip, like sharks drawn to blood. I wonder how the world would turn if all the malls were shuttered up?

This obsessive-compulsive shopping behavior a true testament to the teachings of Pavlov. We are chickens pecking at the red dot...

Yeah never go shopping day after Thanksgiving. I'd probably go to jail for ripping out someones jugular veins for pushing me around stealing stuff out of my basket. People become monsters the day after. Maybe that's why its really called "Black Friday ".
