Connecting Our Dots

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As the graduation season is upon us, taking heed of the past, as well as one’s future, is unavoidable for those of individual determination. (Image by ErikJohansson)

Connecting Our Dots
by Odin Roark

Life is always holding court,
Adversity on the stand,
Curiosity fueling jurists,
Imagination delivering verdicts.

The calligraphy of judgment’s missive
Needs not a complicated typeface.
Simple script suffices,
Revealing that dot-connecting
Doesn’t work going forward,
Without peering backward,
Where unconnected lines
Reveal future’s longing.

And so it is.

Down the road,
Intersections persist,
Where recall of past choices is unavoidable,
Reminding us off-the-beaten-path alternatives,
Still afford the quintessential challenge.

Dot connecting,
Our omnipresent summons,
Always delivers
A mind-bending cluster,
A glance outside the traffic jam,
Where steering our own fulfillment,
Remains the message.

Progress can deliver a driverless car,
Destined to take us through congested crossroads,
But using whose connected dots?

Looks like you have touched on a 'pulse' button with this poem. How people feel about dot-connecting in the path of life. I am surprised there haven't been more comments on this topic; I know the title sure made me select this one. You choose the most remarkable images to accompany your writing. Recall of past choices is unavoidable only if the dots are not numbered. If the dots are numbered (as society has pretty much done for us), we just go to the next number because it isn't our picture we are drawing and there is no need to look for anything other the the next given. In drawing our own unnumbered dot-connections, we would live up to your lines: "Doesn't work going forward,/Without peering backward,/Where unconnected lines/Reveal future's longing." This poem was a game of Twister and I liked it. ~~ Diana

This is such a well-stated view of our predicament in attempting to forecast the future, and about which set of dots best reflects the wisest course to choose. Science analyzes millions of past dots, sets up data collection procedures to collect present patterns, and even more algorithms to analyze anticipated patterns in reaching tentative conclusions about the broader new and changing set of dots that are most likely to occur. It is a task that is fraught with errors, laughed at by fools, ignored by ideologues, mocked by those who have the "truth" in hand, but it comes closer to reality than does any method thus far produced by human minds.

what if we make a new connection of dots? however, if it's driverless, i don't see it would be possible.

In life, it's so important for us to connect the dots. Focusing is required when driving in our own journeys. Always should know where we are heading. If in doubts and not successful, make a U-turn, and then choose another road, connect with another dot. Always needs connecting. Never let yourself be "unconnected" with anything. That will be too hard to live.

Some do not connect the dots and end up driverless on a meaningless highway. I prefer to connect the dots as I go and see the road ahead clearly, if not perfectly.

Ever withering dendrites, sputtering synapses, few thru-roads intersecting, fewer choices, and in the end just one destination. Driverless cars, indeed! Aren't those dots are really yellow painted dashes. Maybe we should slow down, Odin. Be well, Jan
