Sir Worm

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The Las Vegas massacre reminds some of us that not doing anything about “massacres” can ultimately evolve into the past… a time never to be forgotten. There’s much to be admired and respected before civilization as we know it might be gone.

Poem Artwork
Sir Worm

As Grand Historian,
I’m an “everywhere” sort of thing,
noticing you daily, Mr. Worm.

I’ve chronicled your earth-fed families
growing and prospering over the centuries,
some giving back to the Nature that has fed your progeny,
us, just about everything…your on-a-hook-sacrificing
for the fin-kin of our planet notwithstanding.

You’re an efficient and proud species,
even if a bit on the non-descript side,
but always dependable as you procreate,
populate, propagate Nature’s needs.

As always, being all business,
you are early to rise on this August 6, 1945,
checking out cake crumbs of yesterday’s birthday party
beneath the cherry trees where pennants and paper lanterns
still sway askew in the sunrise breeze.

Now you peer out from beneath
your leaf and consider your daily schedule,
skipping a nook here, an over-shopped bush there,
always stearing clear of the family koi pond,
being the hearty eaters they are.

You’ll go about completing your methodical checklist,
staying wary of mother-birds anxious to provide breakfast
for their nest of newborns.

You’ll stretch your senses toward the sky,
take in the rich fragrance of August’s lavender,
and by chance catch a glimpse at the contrails
very high toward heaven, where a fortress-plane
makes its way south, passing island after island, until…

You’ll know about its purpose tomorrow morning,
when your world of earth and flowers begin worrying,
begin to shrink beneath the toxic mushroom cloud
drifting and looking to settle where it may.

Me?

I’m just an ethereal curator of archives,
wondering why nuclear history needed such a beginning.

Too soon they forget! I like you using the worm's eye for us to "see". The earthworm is the backbone of America! (for the world, that is)

Love ya!

A worm's eye view of what we've evolved into. As generations move into new generations, history is often forgotten in the rush of events moving forward. Our amnesia of massacres in the past does not prepare us for massacres of the future.

As the atomic clock often tells us we have been on the edge of annihilation since that fateful dropping of two atomic bombs with the express purpose of stopping a war, not starting one. All it takes is one crazed action to set the dominoes falling and we are thrust into a world of atomic annihilation that no one ever wished for, like a sudden thrill killing of innocent concertgoers only there for a good time and peace.
