Dreamscape Enticement

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The pursuit of success sometimes convinces us to dodge choices, knowing they are causal in nature, creating consequences that become yet further choices. Eventually, however, some make an all-important decision, if only to assuage the pressure and find some solace in just being who they really are. (Image by Tatiana lliina)

Dreamscape Enticement

We discovered.

There's a location,
we all know it,
Main Street America,
that place where
deals are consummated,
innocents made guilty,
trials courts a sham.

We learned.

This place of early starts,
schools short of everything;
lined paper scant,
pencils with erasers gone,
full length crayons just history,
once chalk stubs, now nubs,
all while administrators ignore and laugh,
all the way to the bank.

We tried.

That place of the first job,
first date,
first car,
first seduction.

We tested.

Some found the glitter place
where 3-piece suits
came from Brooks Brothers,
not J.C. Penny,
where 2 martini lunches
boded well the norm,
trumping yesteryear's
Big Macs and cokes.

We joined.

Where going home
meant driver-driven,
doorman-opened,
gilded elevator ascension,
home of wrap-around glass,
marble floor supported,
sensory-indulgent décor,
programmed delusions,
where only one’s own voice is heard,
mirrored self-image as only reflection,
all while standing atop terraced view.

We looked out.

We looked skyward.

We looked down.

Seeing thirty-eight floors below,
everyday people,
ones enticed by this out-of-touch bubble,
this insulated veneer,
of platinum exterior,
holding in abeyance the threat
of the dreamscape-bubble popping.

Some are jolted awake, finally,
opting for a conscious dream satisfied;
a good cup of coffee and maybe a cheese danish.

I know that coffee and a danish (out of a machine) oh too well, Odin! Climbing that ladder does require much of those who climb it. 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!

In the history of dreams, worst-case scenario what you describe, there on the 38th floor, with "mirrored self-reflection as only reflection." I live on the 33rd floor but see only city-scape and the glittering sparkle of the Gulf. I'll take the sparkle any day.

The highlight of my day lately has been the coffee and cheese Danish , I envy anyone who is lucky enough to be passionate about their day job. All the trappings of success seem to be more and more hidden as benefits continue to decrease. Vivid piece.
