A Banyan Allegory

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Like the banyan tree, some seek the eternal circuitous route of life, death in perpetuity as an impetus for positive thinking and living. A banyan (or 'banian') is a kind of fig. It usually starts life by growing on another plant as an epiphyte. Its seeds germinate in the cracks and crevices on a host tree, or on other structures like buildings and bridges. "Banyan" usually means the Indian banyan or Ficus benghalensis. The Banyan tree is mentioned in many scriptures as a tree of immortality. Its aerial roots grow down into the soil forming additional trunks and is therefore called Bahupada, the one with several feet. A banyan tree procreates by drooping branches which when in contact with the ground develop roots and a new trunk which after several years can not be distinguished as a separate tree, so in a sense, all banyan trees are descended from a single parent tree, and in theory, can live forever………. A Banyan Allegory

He drifted from isle to isle,
A seed without grounding,
Caught endlessly in currents,
Wanting only to settle.

Find purchase.

A sudden change,
Life's option to live,
Freedom to branch,
To seek roots,
To create an umbrella of protection,
Even as existence would have to weather many storms.

The birth brought
Unknown roots to flourish.

Upward they grew,
Success seeming inexorable,
Nourishment seemed coming from on high,
Even as winds bent sprouting’s lift,
Its inherent longing to procreate prevailed,
Cyclic-origin remained its unique heritage.

True to its identity,
Lineage grew,
Its upward thrust respecting ancestral integrity

Battling forces challenged its weathered exposure,
Yet, holding firm, Banyan stood its ground,

Willing to die if necessary.

A billowing umbrella of knowledge,
A festive growth of yin and yang
Enjoined the celebration of endurance,
Embracing the accomplishment,
In the coolant of shade,
The warmth of parting branches.

Man had much to learn.

Indeed, man has much to learn and indeed it is nature that will teach us.

A nice allegory about man's overtaking the world and becoming "forever," at least in the Arthur C. Clarke view of "continually expanding throughout the universe."

I feel so fortunate to have seen a Banyan tree in Key West a few years ago. Really a unique tree.
