Need
Once I was want of roof,
Need delivered a park bench.
When food was scarce,
My eyes made steak out of Spam.
When my father remained far away,
I sufficed with letters of compassion.
When I wanted a friend,
I found music as companion.
When want of creature comfort went knocking,
Spartan living ushered me in.
When desire for the flesh of love went unanswered,
Patience fulfilled necessitude.
Self-respect, mutual-respect, universal-respect
Is now the mantra of our love.
Need, remains the focus.
Ignoring nonessentials, the strategy.
Love ya!

If the poem is from true life experience, and I believe that it is, that experience at a young age teaches a lot about how much we really need to survive. Anything more wanted is merely excess… Certainly something we can't take with us.
