Quiet Eulogy

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- Post-fire – Some trees are killed immediately by fire but others die up to several years later. Fire-injured trees are more susceptible to other stressors, such as beetle attack and drought. Trees with adaptive traits—protective buds or ability to re-sprout—can recover more easily post-fire. (Image by U.S. Forest Service)

Quiet Eulogy

What if I had survived, you ask?

What beauty of color

My growth would have remained.

What grand presence might my bark have portrayed.

What gentle whispers I would have had with fellow trees.

What open arms my limbs would have been to the sun.

What journeys the squirrels and birds would have continued.

What reward I would have continued to give to the poet

Gazing upon my ballet of service

With arabesques and tango moves of love.

Yet…

Even as my core of life is gone

My roots may receive another chance.

A part of my life has moved on

My ash is now but particles afloat

Searching for continuance of existence.

Wonderful personification of the varied value of trees, like individual humans. Some with great value and greatly mourned and others with the ability to spring forth again from the roots. Some trees even require fire for their seats will re-sprout.

There are different time scales and recollections for calamities of the universe and those within the universe. We live with the latter as you have reminded us so well. Peace to you, my friend. Ed
