Chilling Heat
Time passes roachlike,
Wobbling and pausing,
As if some of its extremities
Had already been severed.
A clock mindset embodying the whole of infinity,
An enigma climbing up a kitchen wall,
The very thought of it
Conjuring up these itsy-bitsy shivers,
These hot, tick-tock maniacal thoughts.
It must be the heat.
Neither one of us
Can cool down,
Even on brisk winter nights.
Oh, menacing Time,
You need cold showers to cool off.
And so do I.
Makin’ it to a hundred
Is bound to break a sweat a few times,
Ya know?
Your poem struck me like a lightning. I am 20 years shy of that glorious attainment, but I'm finding time to be leaping from season to season without much chance of savoring it anymore. And, I awake to seeing imaginary roaches made from ordinary objects in my mind's eye as a normal occurrence while real fruit flies circle and irritate.
From my paralysis I have a neurogenic bladder. Every time I urinate, perhaps about 20 times a day, autonomic dysreflexia and the adrenaline shot increases my blood pressure, making me feel strange and hot while I am perspiring profusely and any exposed skin drops 20° in an instant. At night in bed, I suffer this strange attack of heat and cold at least, ten times. Thankfully, it lasts only a few minutes if I'm covered even when the temperature is above 80° in the house.
Yes, I wonder what aging is going to throw at me next. Not looking forward to it.
