Phantasmic Heat

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- They say some dream in color, others in black and white. But, don’t we all dream heat, often awakening in a sweat. For a few, the echo of “ Something wicked this way comes” remains reluctant to leave, perhaps wanting to stay around for Halloween? (Image from pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Phantasmic Heat

Some handcuffed bed-head youth running

Being chased into an alley by

The press

A cop ready to stun him.

A gasp of bewilderment

Spewed toward the windowsill

Dragging you from the bed shaking

Drenched in sweat

Now fully awake at the window

Peering down into

The alley’s fissure of bubbling combustion

Chimeric shadows rise from the flames

the alley walls shudder with their presence

as the orange and red reach higher and invade the shadows

sending them skyward over the fire encased building

leaving behind the odor of

smoldering coals

and grilled flesh

of those left to fall

into the pit

of phantasmic heat

You shudder

Stagger back to bed

Continue to sweat

Continue to hear

“By the pricking of my thumbs

Something wicked this way comes.”

I must say that I do have weird dreams. The source of many of my short stories. But I've been fortunate not to have the kind that makes me wake up in a "cold sweat." Perhaps it is because I sweat profusely during periods of high blood pressure just before I have to urinate about 20 times a day. It is a result of autonomic dysreflexia that only those of us with a high level spinal cord injury have the pleasure of having. Most of those you see in wheelchairs with lower-level injuries do not have the pleasure, the fun of freezing from sweat on a hot day and having their shirt soaked over urination and not heat.

For those that have phantasmic heat, like Stephen King, creating horror stories is their genre. I'm glad I don't feel that kind of horrid stench of burning flesh.

This is like riding the chandelier from the balcony down to center stage at the opening of Phantom of the Opera only to discover you've landed in the middle of Hamlet just before the chandelier explodes and the theatre catches fire--only to discover it was all a dream, a prelude to Halloween. That's a helluva ride, Odin.

Your words tell me of an ongoing hellish circus!! I can feel it along with a looming "Something wicked.............", Odin!! Very cool.......or, rather, hot!!!

Love ya!

Can't say that I have ever thought about it one way or the other. Time can be weird in a dream, and the silence too. But I don't recall ever dreaming of heat, even though I lived many years in a desert climate. Interesting.
