Courage and Sorrow

With so many personal stories of sorrow and loss, one wants it all to stop, but… (Guernica painting by Picasso)

Poem Artwork

Courage and Sorrow

Courage let fly the armor-piercing munitions,

Sound is fractured by rolling thunder

 peeling off Gaza’s disappearing yesterday.

Late Mediterranean evening engulfed in black, getting beastly,

The air having not felt such density of death in generations.

Intrepid shells keep flying,

Even as recoils of sorrow push back

And rounds of destruction find targets,

Splintering wood, plastic, cement, and bodies

Spreading a finger-painting of life, death, and recompense.

Courage hears “an hour and a half, then we’re relieved.

A day and a half, maybe home.

A year and a half, many years, another century…

Will we ever be home?”

Courage leans over,

Letting drop the tears

Merging with the murky flow of rain and death.

Sorrow feebly holds the bodies of both sides,

Weeping all but spent.

A powerful statement of realities now occuring.

Oh, the sorrow that is going on in this world!! This all takes me to Barry McGuire's song, "Eve of Destruction". Is there ever a "winner" in a war? I think not. Everybody loses. Let's hope for a brighter tomorrow!

Love ya!

No one is winning in this exchange of random shots destroying buildings and people indiscriminately. Makes one long for the day when fighting was mono to mono and women and children were spared only to become slaves to the victors.

In perspective, while it seems like war like this is getting worse, the overall impact on the human population is much less than it was in all the centuries before, sometimes wars and their accompanying diseases wiped out whole populations.
