Owning Yourself
Might it be that no one belongs to no one,
Save themselves?
Why has society set up a grand answer?
Couples,
Marriage,
Live ins,
Co-dependency
Et al.
All of it might be but alternates,
Seductively asking we avoid the question,
DO YOU OWN YOURSELF?
For…
The mandate advocates,
You are part of a leasing-super-natural-scheme,
Created by those people and institutions that have the power and money to dominate
MOST EVERYTHING.
Of course,
There are those in a compatible relationship,
Having made it through the razor wire and shredded psychic phase,
Remaining cogent via spit and glue binding the heart and mind.
Once there…
Remind yourself that you own yourself,
The good,
The bad,
The indifferent.
Apologies accepted,
But not as redemption
Should you be playing
The duality game
Trying to accommodate both sides.
Yeah…
He or she
Will look at you
At me
And wonder
Yes…
If you’re lucky,
They’ll get the answer in life’s grand scale:
To accept what it’s really all about:
Me accepting full responsibility for me,
Me supporting the integrity and independence of a partner,
Me caring about other close relationships.
Might owning yourself beat out the threat of self-loathing advancing
Toward chronic illness and premature death?
Odin!
That last line certainly packs a punch! It holds so much truth. In my first marriage, I was torn between two families and it literally made me sick and took me to some scary places. As usual, Odin, your words get a point across. Write on!!
Love ya!
Jane
When she saw that I needed more help, my partner volunteered, without additional pay, to make sure that I was covered no matter what happened. We established a bond where she trusted me, unconditionally, and I trusted her the same. Now, near the end of my long life, she is my lifeblood and there are only a few, very caring, people out there that could replace her in my life if that ever was needed. Of course, if something would happen, I would have to hire others until I found one or more that would be able to fill that gap again.
All that being said, I still feel empowered and own myself. I pay for the services rendered even if they are given from the heart require no payment. With that undergirding my life I am free to be in charge of it until I go. All around me I see aging people with various ailments taking them down. Eventually, they don't own themselves and but are relegated to assisted living or other structures to care for them when they no longer can care for themselves.
